The most important celebration in Ehmej

The Assumption, August 14th. It is considered the greatest celebration in Ehmej, since the town’s church is named Church Our Lady of the Rock. The villagers celebrate this very special day. They used to gather in the church’s square, where they cooked the traditional “Hrisseh, or Kamhieh”. All the villagers participate in this celebration with no exception. Everyone coming to the square had to bring a pot or a bowl to get some “Hrisseh” to their family, since this is a source of blessings. Nowadays, some traditions have changed, and some are still the same. Villagers still celebrate this occasion. Candles are lit on every roof of the town’s houses. After the Holy Mass, the villagers gather in the square of the church to spend the evening animated by the talents of the village, and enjoy a rural dinner.

New Year’s Eve: the villagers used to prepare boiled wheat and feed their poultry and livestock, in order to preserve and bless their production.

On the night of Epiphany, they put a dough outside so that it leavens, and do not leave their houses at that night.
